Conservative religious leaders and left-leaning feminists alike have fallen prey to this irrational fear of communication. The only thing Mediaphobics seem to have in common is larger -- and uniquely American I -- neurosis we mental health specialists like to call BSES, or Blame Somebody Else Syndrome. Mediaphobia, in fact, can be seen as a case-specific instance of BSES: rather than attacking the root causes of crime, sexual violence, and other problems, the mostly-bourgeois sufferers of Mediaphobia instead decide to suppress the media which brings images or descriptions of these problems into their home.
